When I was younger I got a lot of coincidental exercise, especially in my 20s, when I was climbing every weekend, commuting by bike, and doing lots of skiing in the winter. When my company moved to SF, I followed, and quickly replaced all the exercise with clubbing, going to hear live music, eating out excessively, etc. A few years later, I went to a paintball outing hosted by a new employer. It didn't seem strenuous at the time, but at the end of the day I was wiped out and just lay on the sofa for an hour or so to relax. When I eventually stood up, I almost passed out. It was the first (and only) time it's happened to me in my life, and it scared the crap out of me. Later that week I bought a used exercise machine off CL and started running again. Before long I was back to my old self. I've kept up with lifting and running as near-daily activities since then. Yoga comes and goes, so I've lost some flexibility, but in some ways I'm in better shape than I was 30 years ago before I moved to SF.
