... true, except that the new appliance that is cheaper and more efficient will last you 5 years at most (and then the main board that need to be replaced will cost as much as a new machine).

- LargoLasskhyfv 4y agoAnd what about the ongoing emissions of all the sourcing, mining, transporting of the raw materials, and fabricating parts, assembling these, and transporting them in turn? Hard problem to solve in the current system, but nonetheless it exists. Where are the truly innovative 'Industry 4.0' factories producing individualised spare parts on demand by means of 3D-printing, or whatever, to only exchange degraded components of truly modular appliances? Or cars?

Or cars? Hopefully that's the next step, but it looks like legislation will need to force their hands. It already somewhat started with some manufacturers though (i.e.: https://frame.work/ https://frame.work/ for laptops).
