A new Brother laser lists at $120 and toner is about $40-60. I went the LaserJet 4xxx route and am into it for about $400 after repairs and toner. The DRM is very minimal, however aftermarket cartridges have never given me particularly good results. While the HP is just that much better at dithering, at your price point it's hard to ignore a new Brother (except for the issue of creating additional waste, etc).
