I'd imagine more of it has to do with trying to beat every penny of those desperate to get more use of their $15k+ scanner, and less to do with it being a technically complex task. That's assuming it truly just being a port issue is correct. It's a niche market, and they're just taking advantage of such niche market, however morally gray it may be.
