A good advice I was given a long time ago and I have since followed: When you need to admit a mistake or apologize, get it all out and be truthful about it. Effectively get it over and done with. People do appreciate honesty, but will strike back with retaliation if they find out you only appeared honest. Telling a half truth is no better than lying.
