I find it difficult to believe that it was substantially different. Many attempts have been made to alter this and all have ended in predictable failure. Sexualities seem to be very innate to a person. So why should it have been different in a different time?
- JoeyBananas 4y agoI think it was substantially different because probably most of the things that the ancient Romans did in the bedroom would be highly illegal today.
- defrost 4y ago> probably most of the things Some examples here would help .. preferably tied back to actual Roman poractices and their frequency rather than some idealised and exaggerated notion drawn from watching the unexpurgated Caligula. Bear in mind that Gaius Valerius Catullus in Catullus 16 is making a threatening statement of intent in a poem .. which is no more illegal today than rappers saying they intend to shoot other rappers for dissing them. It's free speech until they follow through as stated.
- JoeyBananas 4y agoSex with minors, slaves, women as legal property, rape, etc.
- defrost 4y ago* Between 2000 and 2018, nearly 232,474 minors were legally married in the United States. The vast majority of child marriages in the U.S. were between a minor girl and an adult man. In many cases, minors in the U.S. may be married when they are under the age of sexual consent, which varies from 16 to 18 depending on the state [1]. * Slaves, sure - although that's more of a societal wide situation in Rome rather than something "mostly in the bedroom" and it's hardly all that long ago since Civil Rights was a legal right within the US (and slavery | effectively slavery is still legal within parts of the world). * "Women as legal property" - we just covered slavery, see [2] for Woman as Citizens in Rome - no votes or political office, but a number did rule as Empress and many kicked arse in terms of power and negotiations. * Rape - as is the case today it was agaianst the law but the privileged could get away with it re: slaves and those of much lesser status .. nonetheless, see [3] There are famous tales of rape in Roman times, of course, just as there are in the US.
