Russia and Ukraine have been named as the 2 most corrupt nations in Europe. It makes me wonder how NATO is making sure that none of the military aid it's giving to Ukraine ends up being siphoned to Russia or that some Ukrainians aren't just taking advantage of the aid and enriching themselves? I doubt the amount of corruption has decreased since the war started.
- verdverm 4y agoThe corruption in Ukraine has been decreasing for some time. It seems that the war has brought intense nationalism and honor such that the pace of dealing with that corruption has sped up. This is according to some Ukrainian content creators I follow. There have been some high profile cases the independent corruption task force is prosecuting and some high level departures from the government. Yes it is still going on, yes it is getting better. This NYT article has a list of other articles that speak to this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34512578 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34512578 Separately, Ukrainians have developed a deep, blind hatred for Russians. NATO is not sending military aid, individual countries are and have their own rules. For example, the US has been given assurances that the HIMARs are not used against targets within Russia pre-2014. For another example, see the debate around leopard tanks, compare Germany and Poland stances. It is equally likely that Russia's foreign (Iran, NK, China) support supply chains are plagued by corruption. There was a large report of Chinese companies being used to circumvent the sanctions China agreed to enforce.
- legitster 4y agoThe corruption was a direct result of Russian influence. I don't think there is nearly as much concern over corruption in Ukraine these days. Especially given how much Ukrainians themselves have shown overwhelming enthusiasm for their new national identity.
