The Doomsday Clock Is Closer to Catastrophe Than Ever Before
- more_corn 4y agoI wonder if this is doing more harm than good. People who pay attention and care get depressed hearing how close we are to disaster. People who don’t are oblivious. Wouldn’t it be far better to list the top three things we could do to lessen the chance of catastrophe? Those would change now and then but it’d be forward looking and actionable rather than doom inspiring.
- themodelplumber 4y agoIt's interesting to me that the timeline chart shown in the WP page, while troubling, could also be described as screaming for significant mean-regression, with a setup similar to about 1987. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock#Timeline https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doomsday_Clock#Timeline
- lost_tourist 4y agoAt this point hasn't it become useless as a metaphor? It's been decades now. We're probably more likely to have a nuclear apocalypse from bad tech/human mistake than from actual intentional launch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Arkhipov?useskin=vector https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasily_Arkhipov?useskin=vector https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov?useskin=vector https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanislav_Petrov?useskin=vecto...
- bradknowles 4y agoNah. Read up on the real events behind the Cuban Missile Crisis. One Soviet General in Cuba decided that he didn't want to be the guy who ended the planet. That's why we're all still here.
