Ask HN: Why no HN live chat?
I think we would all be able to cooperate and accomplish a lot more if we had a live chat. Why isn’t there one?
- akersten 4y agoWe've got to figure out how to have more than one page of comments first. The technology's almost there.
- quickthrower2 4y agoAs long as that technology isn’t infinite scroll.
- hahnchen 4y agoIt probably wouldn’t have long and well thought out messages that makes HN what it is

- jonas-w 4y agoKind of offtopic, but how did you find these posts so quickly (5 minutes)? Do you have them as bookmarks, as HN favorites or how do you save them to have them so easily available?
- mattl 4y agoHave people been posting fewer long comments in the last 10 years or so?
- guywithahat 4y agoDoes anyone have any good counter examples?

- silisili 4y agoThe SNR goes way, way, way down with live chat. The brilliant people who take time to write long, well thought out comments, are not typically the same people to have the free time to sit in a chatroom all day. Personal opinion: Without many tools to promote and demote messages, I'd argue group chat is one of the least valuable forms of communication, if your goal is to read something thoughtful or educational.
- isthisthingon99 4y agoLong comments are usually not that great.
- v3ss0n 4y agoIt's interface problem. Keeping depths of thread to two levels would be good enough
- isthisthingon99 4y agoNah, it's more like if your idea can't be distilled down to a few sentences, it's probably not well thought out. A lot of people here write a lot of garbage.
- v3ss0n 4y agoThere are a lot of cases long explanation is necessary. There are many greats comments that are way in depth and breath here than paid articles, and I never seen that in other chat based communities like discord, or slack( a lot worse). There may be garbage but this is public forum anyways, still garbage here is a lot better than top gold post of reddit.
- 082349872349872 4y agoI would suggest OP build a new link aggregator with live chat, if that's what they want. For me, HN already has the attention span of a goldfish; making it more synchronous would not be making it better.
- dvngnt_ 4y agoHN really needs a collapse all child comments

- codingdave 4y agoTry clicking the '[-]' sign to the right of 'next'.
- halfmatthalfcat 4y agoIt would be somewhat trivial to build a live chat browser extension and have rooms per post.
- fomine3 4y agoHello! Do you need a support?
- runjake 4y agoJoin #startups on Libera IRC.
- dchuk 4y agoLive chat is terrible if you want to build an async community where browsing is the primary thing people do. Chat doesn’t preserve anything in an easily findable way, doesn’t organize things into topics, isn’t easy to go back to. I can’t stand the move “communities” have made to chat interfaces. It’s like if someone said “what if we replaced all libraries with just a warehouse full of people talking”. Chat communities are a significant step back in terms of knowledge transfer and creation and I think are more a highlight of how anti social the world is becoming.
- antipotoad 4y agoWholeheartedly agree. I think it’s a great shame that so many communities are centered around Discord, closed off to search engines, and essentially just black holes for knowledge. It does indeed feel like a significant regression from the days of forums.
- v3ss0n 4y agoWell explained. Also chat platforms can't bring valuable discussion like hn . Most chat devloves to dramas and fight. Because there's no topic to follow, nobody read back original posts and it became personal.
- SyrupThinker 4y agoI'm going to slightly lean against this notion. For me personally the actual value of HN is the number of people that have some neat insights on niche topics, rather than it being a "good" place for discussion in comparison to chat. > Also chat platforms can't bring valuable discussion like hn . Most chat devloves to dramas and fight. This to me seems more like a function of the aforementioned people involved. I've personally had plenty of valuable discussions in random chatrooms. Even in more active ones. Meanwhile on HN, a decent portion of the comments also is drama of some kind. (rude remarks, off-hand comments, FUD spreading) Mind you, either medium has it's high's and low's, but I just think they don't differentiate themselves much in that regard. It probably depends significantly on the specific communities one engages with. > Because there's no topic to follow, nobody read back original posts and it became personal. To me this same issues exists on HN, possibly even more prevalent by virtue of being a news aggregator. People frequently do not even appear to read the article before arguing about things (mostly the title). This sometimes makes comments feel like they are done in bad faith, or out of hostility towards the topic/author. Which I don't think makes a good climate for discussion. On some topics even going slightly against status quo can result in gray or dead comments, even when the comment is well argued. Meanwhile, some hostile comments are not pushed against enough. I think the value of the discussions within a community depends far more on how much the community polices it's standards by discouraging unwanted behavior rather than the medium in which it happens. But ignoring that, the lack of notifications on replies, which is something I don't really mind, also seems antithetical to the concept of discussion. Some threads don't end by merit of their arguments but because one of the parties involved did not reply, possibly because of a lack of visibility.
- cantSpellSober 4y agoI think browsing with JS enabled on HN is against the TOC
- barbariangrunge 4y agoIf hn became a live chat site, I might stop using it. I have enough things yanking at my attention already, speaking for myself
- Raed667 4y agoSomeone tried that about 6 years ago [0] I tried it once then never went back. [0] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12431724 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12431724
- Am4TIfIsER0ppos 4y agoThere was an unofficial hackernews channel on freenode but generally people here hate IRC.
- CacheRules 4y agoReading is enjoyable, talking to strangers is not.
