They get to moderate the discussion of the message board, which is what they want to do. It isn't a job - the admins actually get paid. Why would the moderators get anything for creating a message board using a free message board service? If phpBB IPOed 15 years ago, would everyone who downloaded and hosted an instance deserve a cut of the IPO?
