Man who pretends to care about women’s issues makes comment about the looks of the women and not on the merits, or lack thereof, of their points. Note that we can’t see what sign the women he refers to are carrying nor can we tell how fat the people carrying the sign about eating terfs are. I don’t understand the worship this man garners from some. He’s been successful in certain areas but his takes outside of his expertise are generally simplistic.
- karaterobot 4y agoThat tweet was crass, for sure. Surprisingly so for an adult who is also a professional, and what passes for a public intellectual in our sphere. On the other hand, I'm really not sure how you'd engage with someone holding a sign calling for decapitation. There aren't any points to discuss, really. Tangentially, this is why Twitter has never made sense to me at a structural level, as a place where people go to discuss things. This exact interaction seems typical of what the platform tends toward: take smart people, reward them for making off the cuff quips, watch them act stupid.

- amalgamated_inc 4y agoThe merits of their point was literally to murder, decapitate, cook, and consume their political opponents. I think humor is appropriate.
- syzarian 4y agoThe fat people in the pic aren’t carrying the sign calling for those actions. We don’t know if they agree with those sentiments or not. I mentioned this in my post. It doesn’t pass for humor in my view. It’s just a dumb, childish retort. Let’s look at an extreme example to illustrate why the retort is foolish. Suppose it was a pic of Hermann Goering holding a sign saying, “We eat Jews” and the response is to note that Goering is fat. It’s just a dumb take. The response ought to be about how abhorrent it is to call for eating people or decapittimg them. Notice how because of his dumb tweet we are not discussing the important issue of being able to advocate for a position without the threat of violence. We are talking about Paul Graham’s dumb tweet. When get into a fight with mud slingers you come out dirty.
