afaik the linux kernel doesn't read environment variables, but it does write some: processes spawned by the kernel, such as init, modprobe, and request_key, start with some pre-defined environment variables, like HOME=/ TERM=linux PATH=/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin.
