TIL about dead naming.
I would like to think this applies exclusively to referring to a trans person in the here and now. But I guess it's also unacceptable to refer to the designer of the arm chip as Roger Wilson, as they were when they designed the chip rather than what they're called now? And that being so do we also have to update the names of former cat Stevens records?
- gggfgj 4y agoThat was indeed the confusion that Will Braswell referred to in his talk on Perl's history when he made a humorous reference to the author of Pugs being "Autrijus Tang or Audrey Tang" (actually both throughout the duration of the project), which was not done out of malice, but was a callback to earlier on in the presentation when he'd joked about the different pronunciations of Haskell ("Haskell or Haskell"), the language in which Pugs was written. For what it's worth, Tang later went on the record as having no problem with Braswell's talk, and in particular, noting that the Autrijus account on CPAN is still active. The outrage over all this was worked up by others unrelated to the project or the author.
