Lol brown outs is such a nicer name, but I've always known them as a scream test.
- adamckay 4y agoThey're ever so slightly different. Scream test is to discontinue service entirely and see who screams, akin to pulling the plug on a server in a rack when you've got no idea what's running on it, to then plug in back in when you find out it's the finance team running payroll software. Brown outs are typically short-lived purposeful errors or aborts to either shed load to prevent a failure due to capacity exhaustion or cause issues that are investigated by a human to find the service has been sunsetted which raise awareness that something needs to be fixed before it's totally broken.
