Plenty of such stuff is going on. [1] is the list of reactors designs the Department of Energy is working on. [2] is the legwork the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is doing to prepare for the approval process on non light water reactor designs. As for the slow wave reactors, it looks like that idea was put on a back burner. Fast reactors are much more exciting anyway.
