The actual title is supposed to be "🥺: the best sudo replacement", but I'm not surprised that Hacker News stripped the emoji.

- pxc 4y agoReread your comment. Foiled again!
- dang 4y agoI've put it back for you. HN is plain-text-obsessive by design but occasional exceptions make life interesting.

- chungy 4y agoEmoji are text!
- dang 4y agoOk, editded for you above: plain-text-obsessive ^^^^^^
- chungy 4y agoWell, now we're gonna get nitpicky :) Unicode is plain text, therefore emoji are in the set qualified as "plain text." "ASCII text" may be more accurate.
- readthenotes1 4y agooh pwease! (actually, i thoroughly approve of quibbling.)
- dang 4y agoASCII text would be less accurate I'm afraid. I'm open to suggestions!
- rom-antics 4y agoHN is basic-multilingual-plane-obsessive by design. As a bonus it rolls off the tongue nicely.
- msla 4y agoExcept it strips some characters in the BMP, too, such as U+262D
- Wowfunhappy 4y agoI'd say your first description, "text-obsessive", was the most accurate. "Plain text" is a technical term, which generally means raw unicode (or some other character encoding) without additional markup. Emojis are unicode, and can exist in plain text files. "Text" does not necessarily mean unicode, nor any type of character encoding. The books on my bookshelf are filled with text. If any of those books contain emoji, I would consider the emoji to be an illustration, not text. (This is a silly discussion but also the sort of thing I have fun thinking about.)
