Gauche Scheme is a beautiful and mature Scheme implementation that comes with a large supporting code base.

  Chicken is also a very practical scheme with a large well-maintained collection of libraries (and easy FFI).

    I think the Gauche standard library is much nicer than Chicken, and it seems somewhat faster than Chicken as well.
