My family were WhatsApp users, and I moved the family-family chats from WhatsApp to Snikket (XMPP) a few years ago. They still have WhatsApp installed, but consider Snikket the go-to for reaching family members. It's not a WhatsApp clone, but they haven't struggled with it.
