I'm glad that you know the right is on.. but I don't. I live in a country with a right to left language system. Things locally, done in the local language are right side is off. Things internationally behave the way you've mentioned. Checkboxes are infinitely better, because they're not language dependent.
This is an incredible source of frustration - and one that comes up often. As a native speaker of multiple languages, I always pause and do a double-take in order to actually "see" the language, given that I usually don't notice.
