Because everything just gets worse as you age. Sure, my dad said it too back then, but they just didn't get how the world moved on and improved. This time around though it's real, everything gets more stupid and dumb and I hate it.

It's a two steps forward, one step backwards thing. The things you are noticing really are a step backwards, but that doesn't mean progress overall is going backwards.

1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works. 2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it. 3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things. Douglas Adams

  I'm early- to mid- 30s (<35), and I hate basically every UI shenanigan that was invented in the past 15 years or so. Which is to say, Douglas Adams might need to adjust the time window in #2 a bit.

  To be entirely fair invent -> improve -> cost cut often leads to worse UIs. Like when car manufacturers decided that knobs are bad and on top of people hating it it was proved to cause more distractions to the drivers https://www.vibilagare.se/english/physical-buttons-outperform-touchscreens-new-cars-test-finds https://www.vibilagare.se/english/physical-buttons-outperfor... Part of that is trying to have "one size fits all", why waste time perfecting design for multiple cases where you can just shove touch screen oriented design to desktop OS and "just" waste some space ?

Or maybe some things get worse and some things get better and we should stop pretending that it's impossible for things to get worse in tech. It reminds me of when I see old photos and everyone is dressed up so much more nicely than today. And people either respond with "akshually hoodies are just as nice as pin stripe suits" (come on, you know they're not) or "oh what you want to go back to leaded petrol and no personal computers and smoking everywhere and drink driving?" (no, just the clothes). Nuance people, jeez. You can pick and choose things in the past that were better or weren't.
