Agreed - maybe I missed it in the article, but this finding would be way more relevant and interesting if it had some kind of "BC / AD" type delineation, IE: "before" modern medicine and sanitation and "post." Anecdotally, when I think about my own family (with records dating back hundreds of years...) the findings are only true for cases like you suggest.
