I quit by SWE job last year to take care of my kids and I'm happier as a result. If I were to return to the work force, I would prioritize enjoying the job: friendly teammates, no/short commute, interesting problems to solve, no ethical dilemmas about how my work would be used. Life is short and I doubt in my deathbed I will be thinking about all the money I didn't make.
