More than 90% of rainforest carbon offsets are worthless, analysis shows
- PaulHoule 4y agoOn one hand it is true that significant amounts of carbon are bound by plant life and soils but I am flabbergasted at what people have accepted for carbon offsets. There is the problem that any money you send to the third world will be gobbled up by tropical gangsters and will not go to the people will be affected by land use changes (or not make land use changes). On top of that it makes no sense that you are going to take a flight once so now some indigenous people have to refrain cutting down a forest forever. There isn't going to be an effective market in carbon offsets until they are limited to things where you can attach a meter to a pipe going into the ground. Effective carbon credits are going to cost $70-$100 per tonne, but nobody will buy them until much cheaper junk carbon credits are removed from the market.
