When the newest "latest news" story is for Google Summer of Code 2022... why is this being submitted?
- xen2xen1 4y agoWondered the same.. Because they could? I get changelogs, updates, but..
- hnbad 4y agoProbably because someone bumped into it, found it interesting and decided to post it to HN (again). Not all submissions are driven by marketing sockpuppets.
- SquareWheel 4y agoI don't think anybody is accusing the submitter of being a sockpuppet. It's just a rather well-known project already, and there's not any news to discuss related to it right now (as far as I know). I get that there's always one of today's lucky 10,000, but I think a certain threshold of obscureness is reasonable. It wouldn't make sense to submit the Linux Kernel project, or Mozilla Firefox without any news. Maybe I'm overestimating how well-known ReactOS is, though.
- smcl 4y agoI was wondering if they'd reached some new milestone, but yeah it seems it's just one of the "check this cool project out" submissions. It's fair enough, as you said there will be the xkcd lucky 10k who are encountering it for the first time. Though now that you mention it, it would at least be a little bit funny to submit kernel.org and be like "Found this cool indy OS kernel, looks like it's just a hobby and won't be big and professional like GNU but it's still neat" in the comments :)
- fsflover 4y ago> rather well-known project already Do you believe that most of the HN audience know ReactOS very well? I upvoted the submission, because I don't think so.
- _joel 4y agoDepends how often they use the site. It's been posted about many times before. https://hn.algolia.com/?q=ReactOS https://hn.algolia.com/?q=ReactOS
- SquareWheel 4y agoDo I believe they know the project "very well"? No, probably not, but that's an extremely high bar to meet.
- giancarlostoro 4y agoI've followed the project for years, and I assume not literally everyone on HN is aware of it, maybe the power users, but the casual HN reader might find it interesting.
- worble 4y agoWhy not?
- skrowl 4y agoThis is why HN post subject of just the project name are confusing. Is there something new here we should be excited about in the project?
- theodric 4y agoI, for one, just thought of ReactOS again 2 days ago after a large gap. Perhaps the Zeitgeist is presently weighted toward ReactOS. Can't possibly just be my own confirmation bias, because I'm a rational thinker, you see.
- giancarlostoro 4y agoI posted it mainly because not everyone on HN is always aware that ReactOS exists, the thread shows up every year or so, and you always find someone learned something new. I also love the engagement around the subject, sometimes you learn something new about the project.
- _joel 4y agoI wondered too, had a dig through the news/releases since the last post, not real update. Good to let others know of the project though, I guess
- asveikau 4y agoForget 2022, reactos has been around for multiple decades. But I think varying amounts of the HN audience are unfamiliar with any given topic that might seem like old news.
