I had a graduate algorithms class that was graded like this, but the teacher didn't explain and I was clueless. I spent the whole semester super stressed and convinced I was failing, then was shocked and befuddled by an A. "Emotionally trying" is an accurate description of how it felt. Props to this professor; struggling in confusion is a lot more fun if you know that's the game you're supposed to be playing.
