Constructor Theory of Information (2015)
- eternalban 4y ago"So we are not trying to derive quantum theory, or any other existing law, from anything. Our proposal is that the status of information in physics is analogous to that of (say) energy: given the laws of motion of physical objects, neither the concept of energy nor the conservation law for the energy–momentum tensor is necessary for making any prediction from initial data, yet our understanding of the physical world would be radically incomplete without them. The conservation law explains some aspects of motion as consequences of a universal regularity in nature—which is why we expect as-yet-undiscovered laws of motion to conserve the energy–momentum tensor too. Different physical systems that conserve energy can have very different laws of motion, so we do not expect to derive new laws of motion from the universal conservation law. It is a principle—a law of physics that constrains other laws rather than the behaviour of physical objects directly. Likewise, our theory of information consists of proposed principles of physics that explain the regularities in physical systems that are associated with information, including quantum information. This theory also constitutes a framework, not dependent on quantum theory, in which information under a broad range of theories (including ‘post-quantum’ theories, or theories supporting hypercomputation) could be understood, provided that they obey the principles. None of the existing theories of information is adequate for any of these purposes."
- inphovore 4y agoInformation is the removal of uncertainty. If it does not remove uncertainty it is not information. Redefine entropy to “the distribution of potential over negative potential”, and you will see this analog between physics and (revised) information theory. Universal potential resolves as aspect (state) through entropic dilation (distribution of potential over time). This “aspect” is Truth in Objective Reality (a perturbation, measurable IN ANY WAY.) Done. That should be modern information theory. Period. Potential distributes over negative potential. State is momentary resolve. Information is ANYTHING which REDUCES UNCERTAINTY (and only that which removes uncertainty.) Now let’s talk about identity, and what is this “universal potential” anyway? And stop saying “energy” geeze, you sound sophomoric. It is potential. Everything (existent) is universal potential resolving as state in the moment of now.

- inphovore 4y agoCrazy talk you say? Consider most graduates who have studied “modern”information are familiar with this one “entropy described the number of states in a system”. The number of states does not include exceptions (cosmic rays, terminal conditions, irregularities, etc. potential distributed over negative potential? Covers it. What about entropy as laws of thermodynamics? How does distribution of potential over negative potential not cover heat dissipation? What about this absurd correlation with heat and time? Potential over negative potential describes this phenomena better. I don’t expect you to take the random commenters’ word, just look at how convoluted these alternate explanations are compared to this explanation. There is something to be desired. I have more… Intelligence is the mitigation of uncertainty, if it doesn’t mitigate uncertainty it isn’t intelligence. Power is the capacity for effect, if it isn’t effective it isn’t powerful. Uncertainty is obviously the softcore word for entropy (probabilistic distribution of potential.)
- inphovore 4y agoThis view covers inverse square laws, Penrose manifold distribution, and more (granted these must be extrapolated) yet these explanations correlate in ways current convention lacks. (Obviously a shared sense of restlessness toward the inadequacy of contemporary account exists among many.)
