This is how I broke my hip, it was so fast I couldn't even get my feet out of the pedals.
I've been riding my bike for 50 years and I wear a helmet when I feel like it could potentially help but most of the time I don't. Statistically what I do makes no sense at all but wearing a helmet is enough of an annoyance that I only do it in specific situations.
- latchkey 4y agoYou crashed unexpectedly, yet you think you can predict when you're going to need to wear a helmet.
- zwieback 4y agoNo, my point was that what I'm doing makes no sense and I suspect lots of people are in the same boat. Of course helmets help in the specific situation a helmet is for but it's hard to convince people to change their habit for something that's rare and unexpected.
- magicalhippo 4y agoSure it's rare and unexpected. But if it does happen, the consequences of not wearing a helmet can be significant. Similar reason why I wear a seat belt. Being involved in a car crash is rare and unexpected, but the consequences of not wearing a seat belt when involved in a crash can be significant, so I use it.
- latchkey 4y agoPeople buy insurance. Wearing a helmet is no different of a concept. One could argue that insurance is required by law in a lot of cases. People are ok with that, but not laws requiring helmets. The whole point of wearing a helmet is because accidents are rare and usually unexpected. It isn't like someone leaves the house expecting to get into an accident.
