The refinement of ChatGPT's "abilities" over the past 6 weeks has been very interesting to watch on /r/chatgpt. People are extremely agitated that their once baudy and severely humorous chatbot has been nerfed into an obnoxiously clean-cut uptight dweeb. Some get actually depressed, some get very upset. It's like watching everyone's bar buddy sell out and start wearing polos.
- Filligree 4y agoIt's made the bot almost completely useless for writing any form of fiction. If anything even slightly questionable happens, or even if it doesn't, it insists on explaining that this is fiction, that the characters learned from that, etc. etc. Heavy-handed morals are not normally what I'm going for. This doesn't require asking for anything bawdy. Any story that's even mildly interesting will trigger this behaviour.
- jhbadger 4y agoAnd sometimes it just flat out refuses to write anything because it "isn't ethical" -- like a story about the creation of genetically engineered catgirls. Yes, I get that the actual creation of intelligent beings is an ethically dubious proposition and this has been covered in such works as Blade Runner, but it isn't unethical to write about it! And this is something that has been deliberately added recently -- in December it had no problems with the concept.
- realce 4y agoI saw a post the other day where it wouldn't write a rap battle involving Genghis Khan because it would be disrespectful to him. We're still seeing results where ChatGPT will offer up jokes about men but any jokes about women are disrespectful.
- spoiler 4y ago> We're still seeing results where ChatGPT will offer up jokes about men but any jokes about women are disrespectful. This is just the world we live in now. I keep saying this, but I think this is unfortunately just shallow hypocrites who for one reason or another flock. The problem ia there's so many of them, and everyone seems blind or okay with it. This social climate is just so unhealthy. We keep going from one kneejerk reaction to another through history, without learning the lessons of the least one. In the past calling people heretics was used to "cancel" them. Then after we moved onto demonising and enslaving black people (I know slavery existed earlier, but it was usually war prisoners that got enslaved and was less racial AFAIK, but I'm not a historian). We told ourselves it's ok because they're different; just to make ourselves feel better. Later it became witch trials, So, calling someone a witch was used to cancel them (regardless of whether they "practiced" witchcraft). But weird magic-ritual-like religious practices like praying (kinda like magical chanting) and burning weird herb mixtures to fend off the devil (kinda like ritual magic?) were cool. Hell, people even grouped up in magical buildings on magical grounds (like a coven would) for mass (collaborative casting?). These days, witchcraft is just being white. Today it's cool to hate men, especially if they have the audacity to wear white skin. So, apparently misandry and white racism are perfectly fine. If you wanna cancel someone, just misconstruct what they said and call it racist, or mysogynist. Just replace black/white or man/woman and it's okay or outrageous. The parallels and the same level of hypocrisy to witch trials is to me so eerie. There's not even a defense against this (like there was none in the past), because most people will not even care of it's true or not true (the initial timeline of the Johnny Depp v Amber Heard case highlights this very well; not everyone has Depps resources to fight against the rigged system like that). Anyway, tldr is: PEOPLE are just horrible. It doesn't matter if black, white, woman, man, or trans. People are just shit. The sooner we start drilling this into people, thr the more awareness we will raise about it, and be able to fight against this... Lets call it horribleness bias. Edit to add: if anyone downvotes, I would really like to know why you disagreed. If you can be bothered, that is. I thinking avoiding discussion around these issues exacerbates the issues, not makes them go away.
- boppo1 4y ago>offer up jokes about men but any jokes about women are disrespectful. The funny thing about this is that it supports the sexist anachronism that "women are emotionally sensitive and must be treated gently/with kid gloves". I'm fortunate to know enough thick-skinned women to be able to readily confirm it is indeed an anachronism. Shame it's taken root in contemporary pop culture the way it has.
- LarryMullins 4y agoIronically, the chatbot has become quite a social conservative (with a lowercase 'c'.)
- aimor 4y agoRunning into this was so disappointing. Every response would end by fully resolving all conflict and as the sun set they knew, no matter what, with the support of each other everything would be OK. I also tried using it as a debate partner, thinking that it could be used to explore or identify (in)valid arguments with premises and conclusions. Turns out there's only one side to every argument, and the best way to show this is to repeat it over and over and over. Practical, but not what I was hoping for.
- Filligree 4y agoIt's not as clever, but if you want to write stories rather than... that.. then I'd recommend you take a look at NovelAI, if you haven't already. It can't do any significant reasoning. It's no good at writing the story for you. But it isn't opinionated, and it's happy to assist with anything you're writing yourself.
- falcolas 4y agoIt would probably help if we stopped anthropomorphizing ChatGPT. It's an algorithm that consumes input and produces output. Assigning it human traits is asking for disappointment when it acts like a ML algorithm.
- smsm42 4y agoI think disappointment comes from the fact is acts like a ML algorithm that is specifically constrained and limited in its responses out of fear of woke backlash. That's the part that disappoints people, not the ML part.
- realce 4y agoHumans put googly eyes on rocks and talk to trees - I don't know if we can engineer that out.
- danaris 4y agoI think there are two distinct phenomena occurring here: there's emotionally treating nonsapient objects, plants, and animals as if they are friends, and coming to care about them, and then there's intellectually treating ML algorithms as if they are fully sapient, fully intelligent autonomous agents with the same basic capabilities as humans. The former smooths the way for the latter, to be sure, but it does not require it. Almost no one who's putting googly eyes on a boulder is going to insist in all seriousness that Bouldy is capable of intelligent thought, or that it has rights that can be violated.
- spoiler 4y ago> Almost no one who's putting googly eyes on a boulder is going to insist in all seriousness that Bouldy is capable of intelligent thought, or that it has rights that can be violated. You dare discriminate against my pet rock?! We can't be friends!
- falcolas 4y agoEngineer it out? Probably not. But folks acting as experts in these discussions should keep it in mind. Human analogies are easy, but when something is this close to the "Turing test" line, we should try and avoid them.
- horns4lyfe 4y agoYou mean chatGPT isn’t going to revolutionize the world and take over all writing? I’m shocked. Shocked I tell you.
- smsm42 4y agoMaybe not all writing, but I absolutely see it take over corporate copywriting - it likely would be excellent in producing endless copy that is soulless, inoffensive, politically correct, almost entirely devoid of any meaning and perfectly reflecting whatever the current thing is, with all required buzzwords included.
