Baby bust: what happens when China’s population shrinks?
- simonblack 4y agoContrary to common belief, a drop in the number of people is a good thing overall. Resources are spread over fewer people, meaning more resources per-capita. Giving a 'richer' population. Actually, it's the reverse of this. Ever-growing populations require ever-larger sources of energy, food, and water. That costs a lot of money, even if those resources are readily available. More people reduce the amount of available arable land and so food-production is reduced.. Around 1960, China had 800 million people - about a third larger again than India which had only 600 million people. But then China had its 'One Child' policy for several decades. India during that same time did not. Today, China has fewer but richer people than India, some 600 million being raised out of poverty during the last 30-40 years. But whereas India still has most of its people in poverty, and who lack education, China was able to reduce overall-figures of the poor due to having more money on hand because it wasn't forever chasing its tail to supply the needs of all those unborn people. At some point, not only China but most countries of the world will need their populations to be reduced so that the Earth can survive sustainably and indefinitely. The easiest way to do this is to improve on China's 'One Child per Family' policy and make it a world-wide policy of 'One Child per Woman'.
