Wouldn't figure the person doing stickups for iPhones would be technically savvy enough to send phishing SMSs with associated site hosting. Presumably someone in the underworld is offering this "as a service?"
- pianoben 4y agoDivision of labor within a larger criminal organization - line workers snatch the phones, and IT "unlocks" them.
- addcn 4y agoUsually stolen goods are sold to a professional fencer for a price that factors in the risk of not being able to unlock/reset and move the phone. Some of the economics of the underworld are remarkably sophisticated. Everyone has a role and there are some parts of the supply chain that require different kinds of risk. - TheAdamist 4y agoThey are savvy to know enough to force people to disable security/ sign out of icloud so they can sell the phones. This was just in the news in Philadelphia recently where a whole house was forced at gunpoint one by one to unlock and sign out of their iphones. https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/philadelphia/news/how-philadelphia-police-tracked-down-temple-home-invasion-suspect/ https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/philadelphia/news/how-philadelph... Id be in trouble since my work iPhone has some password manager generated random nonsense that i would never be able to remember. All i know is it uas the second single tick on the keyboard, not the first, and they look visually identical on ios.
