I actually wrote some Hope for an FP survey class back in the 80s. Unfortunately, it didn't leave the impression on me that SML did, and I don't remember anything specific about it other than it was clearly an 'academic' language. There was a Byte magazine article about it at the time, and they released an MS-DOS version of the interpreter to go with it. I would bet it's still floating around should one want to give it a go.
