The word shaman has an interesting etymology. One theory is that it's derived from the Sanskrit word śramaṇa [1]. The sramana movement was itself a counterculture movement against the Vedic religion which had decayed and had been monopolized by the elites. Buddhism, Jainism and Ajivikas were born out this movement.
