Japan is doing the only thing that is sustainable in the long run. Western countries keep growing. In large part due to immigration. That is not possible to sustain over long timescales. If Japan can make their economy work this way they are much better equipped for the future then any other country.

- jim-jim-jim 4y agoYes, I agree. I said as much in my most recent comment on a different article. Was a little disappointed there was no further engagement there, because it was nuanced enough to invite discussion: anything but an anti-natal/anti-immigration screed. My long term bet is that Japan is ultimately in a better spot with a declining population and restrictive immigration, rather than Western societies who are poaching from the third world to account for their own shortfalls. I predict the end result from the latter case will be a lot of unhappiness for all parties involved.
