- tptacek 4y agoI'm not going to get too far into that, but, actually two red flags here: 1. That your company hired a CTO, and 2. That engineering reports to the CTO. Part of the point of the CTO title is that engineering doesn't report to them. There's already a word for the person engineering reports to: EM. And a word for the person the EM reports to: VP/E.
- roflyear 4y agoI am the engineering manager :) there is no VP of engineering. The CTOs friend he brought on with him is probably that role but they call them the "principal engineer" or something. What's wrong with hiring a CTO? Do you mean it should be a different arrangement?
- wolf550e 4y agoI guess see 2nd paragraph in this comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34156068 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34156068
- roflyear 4y agoOdd. I would say our CTO is actually a GREAT VP/E - and AWFUL CTO. As in, he doesn't know where to get updated tech news. When I demoed chatgpt he was like "what is this" etc.. He's very smart, incredibly smart, learns quickly, and he can get things done - but he doesn't stay up to date with what is what. He's good at managing people. Like, he's pushing for microservices, but doesn't listen to advice from people like Sam Newman, Martin Fowler, etc.. when they say when NOT to use them. Silly stuff like that.
