Yeah I agree... Front end web dev isn't particularly programming. Especially not "degree in computer science" programming. Unless something has changed in academics I don't think CS degrees are touching anything front end and it's all backend languages, algorithms, math etc. Front end is more akin to technical schools and diplomas, boot camps, etc. I think this may be one cause for OPs disappointment and struggles.
