The previous president of FIDE, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, was the autocratic ruler of Kalmykia, a semi-autonomous region of Russia. He regularly had dissenters and journalists imprisoned, tortured and murdered, and is under sanctions from the US government for aiding Bashar Al-Assad. What I’m saying is that you really shouldn’t expect much from this organization in the human rights department. The “one country, one vote” rule it uses to elect Presidents practically guarantees that the winner will be whoever uses the most brazen vote-buying scheme.
