3 months seems to be a fairly arbitrary length of time, but yes - its not a drug you want to take too often, and redosing is counterproductive.
Its unfortunate that due to prohibition, a lot of harm reduction advice is based on folk wisdom kind of knowledge as opposed to hard science.
