The Medieval Problem of the Productivity of Art
- ggm 4y agoThe article is 'art' in the wider sense, artifices, the mechanistic rearrangement of natural things into objects and if this is "production" or not. It's a debate about nominalism and realism in deep time, contemporary voices. In a pre industrial world, natural goods are closer to their raw forms, little or nothing was a higher derivative in most peoples experience. In arguing that goods are just rearrangements of things that exist, they drive a long way to "rubbing things together makes friction heat which didn't exist before" as a philosophical creation of a new thing (the heat) ironic given what the laws of thermodynamics say, but that's anachronistic. A modern question might well be if art as we understand it, veblen goods, are productive against other forms of production. An NFT for instance. There is no "there" in an NFT. What's been made? Rearrangement of the platonic one and zero in patterns?
