Amid demand concerns, Tesla cuts prices by up to $13k in US
- lern_too_spel 4y agoStill too high. These are bare-bones vehicles originally designed to be sold profitably for $35k and $40k at volume.
- _ea1k 4y agoThey are not bare-bones in any meaningful sense of that term.
- mensetmanusman 4y agoThey are still the among the safest with the only viable charging network infra. It will be years before there is a viable competitor at scale, and the lower they go in price the more they guarantee that.
- lern_too_spel 4y agoThe competitors are also among the safest. https://www.cars.com/articles/tesla-model-y-vs-kia-ev6-best-against-next-452249/ https://www.cars.com/articles/tesla-model-y-vs-kia-ev6-best-... They also come with complimentary charging at that price on a network that already has fast chargers along the freeways most people would need recharging on.
- mensetmanusman 4y agoTesla is still an order of magnitude larger in the charging regards, which means they are in a class of their own.
- lern_too_spel 4y ago95% of buyers only need fast charging on road trips, so having fast charging along freeways is sufficient. This isn't the major advantage you think it is.
- mensetmanusman 4y agoIt is for many new buyers…
- lern_too_spel 4y agoAnd for more people, having fast chargers only where they need them is sufficient, and having complimentary charging is far superior.

- searealist 4y agoWhat a punch in the gut to anyone who bought in November.
- killingtime74 4y agoYou didn’t know electric cars were going to get cheaper? Seems kind of obvious and bound to persist for the next few years.
- _ea1k 4y agoI don't think anyone anticipated the cut to be this big at this particular time. TBH, I thought they'd go to ~60k for the Y and make some modifications to get the tax benefit for their customers. I bet that most people who purchased at the end of last year (when $7,500 discounts were available) had similar thoughts. Instead they've gone down to price points that makes their price after tax benefits lower than they've ever been.
- searealist 4y agoNo one expected the price to drop 20k in 1.5 months.
- kramerger 4y agoEven with these cuts Teslas are still more expensive than other brands, while having many more problems. Why not fix the quality issues instead so people don't feel they are being ripped off? https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/zni97u/140k_tesla_quality/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/zni97u/140k_... https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/q6inov/tesla_quality/ https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/q6inov/te... https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/tmo9ux/teslas_quality_they_claim_this_noise_is_normal/ https://www.reddit.com/r/electricvehicles/comments/tmo9ux/te... https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/7bm4w2/tesla_quality_is_shit_but_its_my_fault/ https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/7bm4w2/tesla_qua... And so on...
- grepfru_it 4y agoLooking at the last one, its white leather.. that's not really tesla's fault. All of the staining damage looks very similar to the damage to the leather seats in my current car also at 80k miles. I believe with leather seats you need to keep up with a weekly conditioning routine otherwise that exact damage will occur (and avoid perforated leather as that will eventually wear down over time). Also, unless you're driving a very high end vehicle, you're not getting genuine leather seats (compare my Ford leather to my friend's Maserati leather is night and day)
- kramerger 4y agoMy seats have been treated twice in 11 years and are in much better shape than those. Anyway, the 3 other videos showed a general lack of quality in assembly and material. However you look at it, Tesla doesnt look like a quality brand anymore. (I know Tesla is very popular on HN and I fully expect my post to be down voted and eventually flagged)
- grepfru_it 4y agoI’m only commenting on the last one. Otherwise tesla has the build quality of my Ford. And that’s because I chose to pay $15k less for a comparable luxury car
- chid 4y agoDo they even make profit at that price point?
- _ea1k 4y agoThey were profitable at slightly lower prices than this a couple of years ago, so it seems likely.
