The first successful space mining company will be one that “mines” the debris currently orbiting earth. It’s simply a matter of physics. There’s over 5 thousand tons of already refined metals orbiting earth in the form of rocket stages and defunct satellites. Even accounting for all the orbital changing manoeuvres and the necessary fuel, it’s easier to go after a couple of old retired heavy geostationary satellites than a far away asteroid.
