If you have gas and heat running to your home you will have one if the other fails. We just had a 24 hour blackout at my house. The fact that we had gas allowed us to remain in the home with hot water, stove and heat without too much inconvenience. One day without that wouldn't have been terrible, but other people nearby lost their electricity for days, which would be very hard without gas.
