Sounds like you are dealing with what people call "brilliant jerks". One thing I have been having worked in the industry is that brilliance is a momentary thing. Once that facade is gone, only thing that you are left with is jerk. Someone mentioned insecure asshole. I have dealt with them. Unfortunately, lot of managers fail to identify them and eliminate them. These asshole do enough to stay in the org while making the workplace toxic.
