I hear you on this, I've worked with folks who have made what should be relatively simple code both undecipherable and unmaintainable, all in the name of some spurious benefit but really just to try out some approach they've read. My response would be to ask them to support some other code for a while, turn the tables somewhat and argue against any whacky changes in the name of maintainability.
