It's weird how I can find more or less live precipitation maps, and quite detailed flood risk maps, but very little information about flooding right now in map form. Searching for 'rain California' on google maps laughably brings up a list of businesses with 'rain' in the name; turns out that weather systems don't buy adverts so organizing information about them isn't a priority. It's quite disappointing that the national weather service maps are so poor and the most -up-to-the-minute maps come from news organizations, eg https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/01/10/us/california-storms-video-photos-maps.html https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2023/01/10/us/california... There's definitely a demand for better scientific mapping that can show extents rather than just location while still being accessible to consumers rather than requiring GIS expertise.
