Fast radio burst reveals the Milky Way is emptier than we thought
- PM_me_your_math 4y agoI've done some amateur radio astronomy, and I have a keen interest in trying to detect FRB. From what I've read, many bursts are around 1400 MHZ with some between 400 - 800mhz. Well within the capabilities of ham radio receivers and even SDRs. Some of them have comparable signal strength to that of CAS A (5500 Jansky @ 408mhz), which is easily detectable with a UHF yagi and small RTL SDR receiver on a drift scan. This is why I believe I might be able to detect FRB from the backyard. I might need some specialized computation to detect them, but I might not. A good place to start might be some of the known repeating FRBs. If you've done some RA, for FRB or otherwise, I'd love to talk shop.
