I think having a higher percentage of the population coming from the developing world certainly lowers expectations and within their communities they are surprisingly resourceful at pooling resources and supporting one another. My wife grew up with a single mother in a low paying job didn't realize she was poor until it was time to apply for college and financial aid because she lived far more comfortably than her cousins back home.
