Tell HN: ChatGPT Should Stay Free
OpenAI is currently evaluating monetization strategies for ChatGPT. Tell them ChatGPT should stay free so it can benefit humanity.
OpenAI's mission is: "Our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity."
https://openai.com/about/
Having an intelligent helper to benefit people but cutting off access by charging for it does not benefit all members of humanity equally. Instead, it should keep it free but sell businesses subscriptions to train it on their own documentation.
Additionally, all the free users generate free press as well as buy-in at large companies. When large companies have users using it, those same users will champion for the company to invest in the business version trained on company documentation.
Therefore, it should stay free to benefit everyone, while charging businesses so that it can take advantage of the generated free publicity to create a source of revenue to continue investing in research and development.
Let OpenAI know the same.
- dtagames 4y agoThere won't be any monetization of the free version we're all using now. There are no paying customers for that. ChatGPT will be sold as a way to work with proprietary data that belongs to a single company or industry and is not available to the general public. That's the paid use case.
- logicallee 4y agoGreat - let them know you think so and would like to keep the free version we're all using now free.
- dtagames 4y agoI did! Wrote a whole article about it: https://medium.com/gitconnected/behind-the-curtain-understanding-the-magic-of-chatgpt-3bbd23f0fbb3 https://medium.com/gitconnected/behind-the-curtain-understan...
- rvz 4y agoIf OpenAI was to be true to their so called 'mission' the models for GPT-3, DALLE-2 and ChatGPT would all be open sourced already. They chose not to and are now a for-profit and slowly becoming Microsoft's newly owned ClosedAI division. Microsoft new investment in OpenAI is meant to give them a return and it is inevitable that ChatGPT will be in some way paid for. OpenAI is losing millions a day for running the system. Nothing is free forever.
- logicallee 4y agoHaving Bing be a paying implentation while continuing to make ChatGPT available for free is a great step toward keeping it free and available to everyone.
- 12311231231 4y agoOpenAI own or will own only 2% of the company... with Microsoft owning 49% and other companies owning the other 49% ... it's not looking good.
- logicallee 4y agoPartnering with Microsoft as an investor and/or revenue stream is a great step. Microsoft haven't ruined Github so far (since buying them), run hands-down the best code editor (VSCode) and also created the amazing TypeScript language and ecosystem for JavaScript. They are a very solid company to have backing and investing in OpenAI. Honestly, these days Microsoft's track record is looking better than Google's.
