I name all my machines after a theme, unlike a major organisation I don't have the money to have dns-server-0 and dns-server-1 which ONLY host an authoritative pair of DNS servers and then web-server-0 which ONLY hosts my website etc etc. But if you can guarantee that something will continue to be one thing for ever and ever, I think maybe a descriptive name can work. It really depends on what level of analysis you're working on. Services probably shouldn't change their core purpose over-time, but business pressures may result in them changing their core purpose.
