This is an idealistic view of it, yeah. But in reality your worth is only what people give you; parents, who hate/actively work against gay people until, oh, one of their children are gay, then they suddenly care (or cast them out). People are plagued by self-interest, we don't unilaterally "care" about one another apart from maybe on a "I'll help you if it doesn't inconvenience me" level. Yeah, I'm sure there are some stellar individuals who go out of their way, but we're talking about the average person here.
