Tell HN: iCloud Login Bug
Steps to reproduce: purchase a new iPhone from a prepaid MVNO. In the setup screen I decided to create myself a fresh @icloud.com account, skipping setting up a lockscreen PIN(relevant later). Here’s where things get fucked. 24h later, getting pop ups telling me to sign into iCloud again. I’m still logged In on the phone in Settings but nothing works. It’s telling me my email or password is wrong?!? The same password I always use for my important account and know by heart.
I frantically attempted every varient Id ever use. Of course I’m scared and looking for options. Miraculously , without knowing password I was still able to change my name from “Anonymous Operetive” to my government name and call Apple… and I was able to add a secondary @gmail in “Reachable at”, supposedly for recovery. I immediately fill out a the standard iforgot.apple.com recovery flow. thankfully they have my phone number verified but and no other contact method beside the gmail. The page says basically it’s been accepted but I should wait 12 days before they’ll be sending telling me instructions for resetting the password by text, in 12 days as a security measure.
After 13-14 days there was still no text from Apple with a password reset link. But something did changed, the iCloud login prompt was now asking me my password for my @gmail account. Somehow it became the primary address and miraculously my normal password finally worked! Now there’s more weirdness, in Settings it won’t allow me to remove this gmail from “Reachable at” in my Settings screen and use my initially setup @icloud.com address.
The email app finally logged in and could receive mail. Now I can’t ducking remove the @gmail.com from my account and use the @icloud as the primarily and there’s a highly confusing UX glitch that occurs; when selecting the old gmail, clicking the red dot, a screen appears saying you have to choose a new Apple ID email. So, I enter my @icloud.com and submit. I get a popup “Your Apple ID has been updated. - Use xxxxxxx@gmail.com to sign into your account. WTf? How has it been “updated” to the email I explicitly just clicked to delete.
I try on iCloud.com in the browser to change my damn email and get the error: “This email cannot be used as an Apple ID at this time.” With no further explanation. Not only is this an obvious, reproducible, scary, confusing bug, but it gets worse from here and there’s major security implications. I called Apple again and explained this issue and offered to share my screen via remote assist. The agent did some research, and then said I have to wait 30 days to remove it. Nowhere in the UX does it say this, and why the fuck? How is removing an secondary, 3rd party email from my iCloud account take 30 days? What if it were compromised. This bug is bad.
I also have experienced a 2nd very similar bug, this time on Mac. even worse in my opinion: where a brand new iCloud account ALSO glitches after 24h and the login prompt on iOS / macOS falsely claims you’re entering an incorrect email/password when you’re 100% sure it’s correct. The story behind this one is posted in the comments.
- unknownoperator 4y agoThis is the second time where I had purchased a brand new Apple device and gotten mysterious iCloud issue which basically bricked my brand new laptop in a much similar way - wherein 24h later after establishing a new brand new iCloid upon setup- I’m signed out of everything. attempting to sign in via MacOS prompts telling me the email or password is incorrect (despite literally copy and pasting it from a file). No way in hell it’s wrong! logging in on iCloud.com web version said something different- that my email didn’t exist! Despite me seeing it logged into my macOS settings with my very own eyes, they claim it didn’t exist. Fortunately I also had my phone number as a backup, called Apple support, and told the agent about my issue. At first the support agent couldn’t find my account. I knew it did exist in some capacity because now the name was unavailable for registering anew. thankfully she did some digging was able to find it via my linked phone number. Come to find out, my account had been deleted/disabled by some other department for unknown reasons, she was baffled and never seen anything like it. said my account looked like accounts where people had requested manual deletion of their entire account(a process that normally takes like weeks...) she was baffled why this could have happened, had me on hold a while and had things escalated, Thank god she was able to get the “Marketing” department to re-instate (parts of) my account (to a partial extent such that I was able to log out of my MacBook and factory reset the thing) The next day, I tried logging into the iCloud webmail page and now it says account is disabled, (Not invalid password like it before however). Thankfully that wonderful agent could see my issue from her end and escalated the call and saved my $2000 MacBook. But still…. To think this happens… and both these mysterious iCloud sign in issues telling me my email/password is incorrect within a year of buying 2 new devices is unsettling. It could be that my choice of names could of triggered some sort of internal error or spam mechanism and was auto disabled. I tend to use names like “Anonymous Operator”, “Unknown Name”, “No Name”, as my First Last name which might have something to do with it. And use emails like unknown.account.email@icloud.com” “unknown.user.mailbox@icloud.com” and similar such things so maybe that has something to do with my problems.
- breckenedge 4y agoYeah it’s been this way for years. You cannot convert an account that uses a non-iCloud email to use an iCloud email as primary.
